Shortcut Sugar Cookie Cutouts

No matter what type of party you are hosting, a platter of perfectly decorated sugar cookies will serve double duty as both a festive centerpiece and a delicious treat.

 

The secret to creating cute confections without spending hours in the kitchen is using prepackaged cookie dough. With a few extra ingredients and some professional techniques, you’ll have perfectly shaped sugar cookies that are ready to be decorated!

 

Shortcut Sugar Cookie Dough

  • One 16 ounce package of premade sugar cookie dough
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour plus more for kneading and shaping
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla, almond, or lemon extract

 

 

Step 1: Unwrap prepared sugar cookie dough and place in the bowl of a stand mixer. If a stand mixer is not available, use clean hands to knead extra ingredients into prepared cookie dough in a mixing bowl.

Step 2: Add ½ cup all-purpose flour and 1 teaspoon extract of your choice. Mix on low using a paddle attachment until extra ingredients are well combined.

Step 3: Lightly flour a clean kitchen surface. Remove dough from mixing bowl onto the floured surface. Knead with clean hands until dough is smooth and uniform in consistency, approximately 2-3 minutes. Dough will be very thick and slightly crumbly.

Step 4: Form dough into a ball and flour well. Wrap with plastic wrap or aluminum foil and refrigerate for at least one hour. Cold dough is the key to flaky, sturdy cookies for decorating. Dough can be prepared several days in advance and kept in the refrigerator until ready to use.

Step 5: Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Step 6: Flour a clean kitchen surface again. Remove dough from refrigerator and unwrap. Cut dough in half. Place one half of the dough back into the refrigerator while rolling and cutting the other half. Dough may need to be kneaded by hand to soften before rolling.

Step 7: Using a floured rolling pin, roll dough to approximately ¼ inch thick.

Step 8: Place a silicon baking mat onto a metal cookie sheet for stability.

Step 9: Dip edges of desired cookie cutter into flour. Press into dough. Use a small spatula to carefully lift cookie cutouts and transfer onto silicon baking mat. Place approximately 1 ½ inches apart.

Step 10: Bake cookies for eight minutes or until just golden. Cool completely on a wire rack before decorating with royal icing, prepared frosting, or melted chocolate.
