What is the difference between a cupcake and a muffin? Here are some possible answers to this discussion.

Frosting – Frosting, or icing, is one of the main factors people mention as a distinction between cupcakes and muffins. Cupcakes are nearly always with frostings on top, while muffinsare generally without. Although many muffins these days are made with frostings on them gradually to eliminating this characteristic as a factor of difference, frostings today still remain to be the first recognisable differentiation between a cupcake and a muffin.

Structure and Consistency – Cupcakes are similar to cakes. They have a light, fluffy texture and consistency. Muffins however are more dense, and are quite bread-like in texture.

Ingredients – Cupcakes are mainly made up of flour, butter, and sugar while muffins have a tendency to be more experimental. All kinds of different ingredients can be added, like fruits or grains like oat, bran, etc.

Sweetness  – Cupcakes are and will always be  thought of as sweet. Muffins though are not necessarily so. There are a large number of savoury muffins around.

Eating Occasion – Cupcakes are eaten or given during birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, or any other special occasion. Muffins however, are considered as a more day to day food product. And due to the fact that muffins often contain fruits and grains, they are especially favoured for consumption during breakfast.

No matter what the differences are between cupcakes and muffins, they both are fun to bake and delicious to eat!
